Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, survived a shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach with severe injuries. As she recovers, messages from supporters worldwide have become a source of comfort for her during sleepless nights, according to her family.
“We’ve been sharing some of the beautiful messages we’ve received with Leah, and she’s loved them, finding inspiration from the care and love you’ve all shared,” her brother, Joshua Stewart, wrote in a GoFundMe update.
Joshua highlighted how Leah is drawing strength from the kindness and support of others, despite facing difficult days. Overcoming insomnia after the incident, Leah reads supportive messages not only from Australia and New Zealand but globally, using the messages to find solace and strength.
On June 13, Stewart was attacked during a morning swim at Coogee Beach. The attack left her with life-threatening injuries, including multiple bites and lacerations. Leah endured severe blood loss, fractures, and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one arm. She was placed in a medically induced coma to stabilize her condition.
Stewart awoke from a 10-day coma, speaking her first words to her mother and partner, Fernando. Her initial concern was for her young daughter, August. Joshua described Leah’s waking as a hopeful milestone in her recovery journey.
Joshua also addressed the delay in responding to messages from supporters, citing technical difficulties with the GoFundMe platform. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support Leah has received, noting how her story connects with many.
A fundraiser was initiated to aid Leah, her partner, and their daughter during this challenging time. The funds will assist with her recovery, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and the major life adjustments she faces as she plans to return to motherhood duties.
Leah’s family expressed appreciation for lifesavers, first responders, the helicopter team, and medical staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital who provided essential care after the attack. Joshua remarked on the family’s shock and devastation following this tragic event affecting a loved one full of life.
