USA soccer star Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in the Round of 16 match against Belgium. This decision follows a controversy over a red card he received during a previous game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Red Card Incident
Balogun received a red card after stepping on the foot of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. The match referee, Raphael Claus from Brazil, halted the game to conduct a VAR review, which led to Balogun’s dismissal.
Initially, Claus ruled Balogun’s action as a severe foul, resulting in Balogun being sent off. Reports later indicated that the red card decision should not have been flagged to the referee.
FIFA’s Decision
The Athletic reported that FIFA’s disciplinary code allows the judicial body to suspend disciplinary measures. This is applicable if another similar infringement occurs during the probationary period.
“The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure,” the code states.
FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension was lifted for a one-year probationary period. U.S. Soccer expressed satisfaction with the decision, focusing their attention on the upcoming match against Belgium in Seattle.
Balogun’s Reaction
Balogun discussed the incident with reporters, emphasizing that the step was unintentional. He expressed that a yellow card would have been reasonable, considering the lack of intent.
“There’s not many places I can place my foot in such a scenario,” Balogun noted, acknowledging the referee’s decision and choosing to move forward.
He shared mixed emotions about the situation but stressed the importance of handling it calmly. Balogun highlighted the influence he and his team have on young fans, emphasizing proper conduct even in challenging times.
The FIFA regulations specify that referee decisions related to play are final and not subject to appeal. This rule is outlined in Article 9.6 of the 2026 World Cup regulations. However, the suspension can be reconsidered under certain disciplinary code circumstances, allowing Balogun to compete in the next match.
With Balogun eligible, the U.S. team looks forward to the support of fans as they prepare to face Belgium.
