At the age of 93, Frank Foster continues to maintain an impressive schedule as a soccer referee. He officiates three times a week for his local soccer association, easily handling red and yellow cards. In his 46-year career, he has overseen approximately 5,500 matches. Foster attributes his endurance and stamina to a lifetime of healthy habits and a balanced diet, which began during wartime rations.
Foster believes his early experience with wartime rations steered him towards healthy eating. He avoided sweets and cakes, finding nutrition in the staples provided. Even now, his game-day routine includes wholesome meals. He starts each day with oatmeal, cereal, or marmalade on toast, fueling him for the full duration of matches.
Foster began refereeing in 1980, covering men’s, women’s, and children’s games. His discipline and authoritative presence keep matches in line. With a background as a military veteran, he scored 98 percent on his referee exam.
Foster maintains strict principles on the field. He criticizes modern refereeing for allowing player antics and is resolute about enforcing rules. Tactics such as fake falls prompt him to issue bookings, and he insists on maintaining control, saying, “I would say to the players ‘stay where you are’ and ‘if you move one more inch, I will give you a yellow card’.”
Though uninterested in modern video reviews that he claims add stress and diminish the game, Foster stands firm on his old-school approach. He opposes close-call penalties that often hinge on minor details like a player’s toe.
Reflecting on his continuing career, Foster admits he didn’t expect to be active at 93. His preparation includes keeping his referee kit clean and ensuring his Adidas boots are spotless after each match.
Foster’s determination and longevity make his ongoing passion for refereeing clear as he continues to contribute significantly to the sport.
