EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Erling Haaland led Norway to a remarkable 2-1 victory over Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s round of 16. Haaland scored two pivotal goals, sending Norway to its first quarterfinals in history.
Haaland’s first goal came in the 80th minute, a header set up by Andreas Schjelderup. This was Haaland’s sixth World Cup goal, matching Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé for the most in the tournament. By the end of regulation time, Haaland increased his scoring to seven goals.
Norway’s goalkeeper, Ørjan Nyland, was key in defending against Brazil. He stopped a penalty kick from Bruno Guimarães in the 14th minute and made a crucial save later against Endrick. Brazil’s only goal was a late penalty kick by Neymar.
Norway will face either Mexico or England in the quarterfinals, marking another first for the team, which last qualified for a World Cup in 1998. Nyland’s saves were especially significant after Norway’s women’s team won the World Cup in 1995.
Bruno Guimarães was the first Brazil player since Zico in 1986 to miss a World Cup penalty, a decision by the team that is under scrutiny. Brazil’s eight-tournament streak of reaching the quarterfinals ended, and they have lost seven consecutive matches against European teams in World Cups.
Injuries and tactical decisions played a role in Brazil’s performance, such as the absence of Lucas Paquetá and the inclusion of Gabriel Martinelli. Norway’s defense, including Julian Ryerson’s return, also contributed to the victory. This win shows the Norwegian team’s growth since its group-stage victory against Brazil in 1998.
The atmosphere at MetLife Stadium was electric, with Norwegian fans performing their iconic Viking Row and celebrity appearances from Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Woody Harrelson, Sofía Vergara, and Jalen Brunson adding to the spectacle.
