Ashwin Reynolds, who grew up recording horse racing bets for his grandfather, is now 52 and owns a construction company. For him, the opulence of the racetrack in Durban is a vision he could never have imagined during his childhood. Until the abolition of apartheid in the early 1990s, Mr. Reynolds and others of color were prohibited from accessing these elite spaces. In a significant milestone, he became the first person of color to own the horse winning the main race in 2021.
“This year marks the 130th running of Durban July horse races in the expansive city located on South Africa’s southern coast,” John Eligon reported.
The event transcends horse racing, incorporating music, fashion, food, and conspicuous displays of wealth. It allows participants to momentarily escape the economic and social challenges prevalent in South Africa.
The racetrack infield is home to more than a dozen V.I.P. tents, referred to as marquees. Renting a table in these marquees involves significant costs, but they offer attractions like stylish seating, bottle service, and exquisite buffets. Some marquees serve as networking hubs, drawing individuals from sectors such as fashion, music, and politics. Emerging artists might find an opportunity to connect with established producers, while entrepreneurs might seek to engage politicians for government contracts.
