Meta created Threads as a social platform to challenge Elon Musk’s newly acquired Twitter, now known as X. Threads immediately set a record by becoming the fastest app to reach 100 million sign-ups, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Since its inception, while the tech world has shifted its focus from social media to artificial intelligence, Threads quietly continued its growth trajectory. Recently, Meta announced that Threads had achieved 500 million monthly users, positioning it as popular as X.
The platform today resembles Reddit, with users gathering in communities to discuss various topics rather than consuming a continuous news feed. Popular subjects include K-pop, the W.N.B.A., dating, and television programs such as “Heated Rivalry.”
Meta, which also controls Facebook and Instagram, developed Threads as a space for conversation. Although news and politics are present, they do not dominate the platform. Features have been tailored to the community-oriented use of the app. There are dedicated community sections, badges for top posters, and algorithm customization options for users.
Connor Hayes, who leads Threads, explained the platform’s growth strategy: “Follow the intent of users.” The ambitious target is to reach one billion users, potentially surpassing Snapchat’s user base of 956 million, as per financial records.
