Two British Royal Navy F-35 jets were dispatched to intercept a Russian maritime patrol aircraft over the Norwegian Sea. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) reported that the incident occurred after the Russian aircraft repeatedly neared a carrier strike group.
The Russian plane, identified as a ‘Bear-F,’ is a long-range aircraft designed for hunting submarines. It flew at a low altitude near HMS Prince of Wales, releasing several sonobuoys in proximity to the carrier, according to the MoD.
In a statement on X, the MoD condemned the activity as “unsafe and unprofessional.” The statement clarified that two UK F-35 jets from HMS Prince of Wales intercepted the Russian aircraft and escorted it until it exited the area.
This development will be updated as more details emerge.
