Increased Allegations Pose Challenge for Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner
Graham Platner addressed voters at a town hall in Portland, Maine, amid ongoing allegations of sexual assault. Recent claims reported by Politico involve a former girlfriend alleging non-consensual conduct from Platner in 2021. NPR has not independently confirmed these accusations.
Platner has strongly denied the allegations, calling them “troubling” and “false.” He emphasized that any accusations of non-consensual behavior are completely untrue. Platner’s campaign labeled the claims as serious, attributing them to out-of-state political operatives.
“Graham began this campaign to fight for a Maine where everyone is treated with dignity,” the campaign stated, “and no amount of desperate smears will stop this movement.”
Platner released a social media video stating, “Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love.” These allegations present significant challenges for Democrats trying to regain a majority in the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. With Maine as a crucial state, the issues have intensified the party’s struggle.
President Trump lost Maine in 2024, and Democrats view incumbent Susan Collins as vulnerable. Platner’s history has included several scandals, complicating the Democrats’ plans. Earlier reports from three women described Platner’s conduct as unsettling, accusing him of demeaning behavior. Platner has acknowledged a “dark period,” admitting past alcohol abuse but denied physical threats.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Platner’s receipt of explicit messages with women early in his marriage, a fact confirmed by his campaign. Additionally, past Reddit posts resurfaced where Platner made insensitive comments. He also acknowledged that he had a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, claiming ignorance, and has since altered it.
Platner openly discusses his struggles with post-traumatic stress from his military service. He presents himself as genuine and relatable, saying, “Voters in Maine understand I am who I claim to be.” However, these allegations spark debate over the viability of his campaign. Platner faces pressure to withdraw from the race by July 13, to allow Democrats time to nominate a replacement under Maine law.
