WASHINGTON (AP) — Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s staff announced he is ‘continuing his recovery’ in a hospital. His hospitalization coincided with the Senate’s recess. However, details about the former Republican leader’s condition remain sparse. His return for Senate sessions next week is uncertain.
On June 14, McConnell was admitted to the hospital. His office’s statement highlighted that he is ‘receiving excellent care.’ A follow-up statement stated he wouldn’t vote that week. Comments issued later praised the support he has received, describing improvements in his recovery. Since then, there have been no further updates. Requests for additional information have gone unanswered.
These health concerns arise amid a tight Senate majority as midterm elections approach. McConnell, aged 84, was the Senate’s longest-serving leader. Although he stepped down, he is completing his term, ending in January.
While leading as the Republican head, McConnell faced previous medical incidents. In March 2023, a concussion led to weeks away from duties following a hotel fall in Washington. Upon his return, McConnell experienced moments of disorientation during press events, needing assistance from staff. The following year, a fall caused a wrist sprain during a GOP luncheon.
McConnell’s health history includes polio, affecting mobility and stair navigation. Previous incidents include a 2019 fall in Kentucky, resulting in shoulder surgery. Elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell held leadership roles from 2007 until recently, shifting from majority to minority positions. Currently, he remains active in senatorial duties, frequently using a wheelchair.
