Navigating Life as a Child-Free Adult
A growing proportion of adults in the U.S. are choosing not to have children. According to a 2021 Pew Research Center survey, many have decided against parenthood due to factors like medical conditions or financial concerns, while others simply prefer not to have children. For those who are child-free, unsolicited commentary can be common.
Angela L. Harris understands these situations. A clinical psychologist with a doctorate, Harris founded the community #NoBibsBurpsBottles for Black women who choose to remain child-free. She emphasizes the importance of understanding that explanations are not obligatory: “If you don’t feel like explaining, don’t explain. Your life is your life.” Those interested can learn more about building a child-free life in the Life Kit podcast available on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
Despite the stigma, Harris often chooses to share her decision, believing transparency helps reduce misconceptions. She sometimes adopts a more sincere approach, while at other times, she prefers a light-hearted response: “I think there’s a playful and joking way in which you can respond,” she suggests.
Harris notes that discussing this choice with parents or partners can be difficult. She advises waiting until you feel comfortable before having significant conversations. “When you feel ready and confident, sit down with your family and explain your choice without expectations. Similarly, having open discussions with partners about differing desires for children should focus on mutual respect,” Harris says.
If you’re child-free by choice, sharing your experiences can help others understand this lifestyle. What have you encountered as an adult without children, and how do you respond? NPR invites you to share your thoughts by emailing [email protected] with your story and location.
