Britain’s Prince Harry has lost a significant legal challenge against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. Court documents revealed that all claims made by Harry and other claimants, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, were dismissed by the court. The case involved accusations of unlawful information gathering practices by the publisher.
The allegations included phone tapping, voicemail interception, and impersonation to obtain personal details. However, the U.K. High Court ruled on Tuesday that these claims could not be substantiated. Lawyers for Harry stated that the alleged activities occurred between 1993 and 2011, with some behavior continuing until 2018.
Associated Newspapers had always denied these allegations, labeling them as outrageous. They argued that the information in question was collected legally from sources known to the claimants. The case was also contested on the grounds of the significant time lapse since the purported events.
Harry’s battle with the press isn’t new. In a separate case last year, the publisher of The Sun settled out of court with Harry, paying substantial damages. Additionally, in 2023, Harry won damages in a lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers, receiving around $180,000, followed by a further payment of $370,000 the next year for his claims.
The ruling comes amid a rare visit by Prince Harry to the U.K. There was much speculation about whether his wife, Meghan, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, would accompany him. However, they did not join him on this visit. Harry engaged in discussions with Buckingham Palace regarding his accommodations and security arrangements during his stay.
Prince Harry has often blamed the media for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while being pursued by photographers. He has also cited negative media coverage as a key factor in his and Meghan’s choice to step back from royal duties and relocate to the U.S. in 2020.
