Ebola has surged in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, recording 1,561 confirmed cases. Areas like Ituri province suffer as local hospitals struggle with the crisis. The death toll has surpassed 500 since May, and healthcare workers threaten to strike due to insufficient supplies and pay. Seventeen health workers have died out of 75 infections.
“We don’t have protective equipment,” stated community nurse Moise Bulabantu. “We’re extremely afraid.”
The Bundibugyo ebolavirus lacks effective treatments and vaccines. Limited global leaders have the power to change this outbreak’s course. President Trump recalled his prior success with Operation Warp Speed during COVID, positioning it as one of his significant first-term achievements. Quick action can make a difference.
Under Trump’s leadership, the U.S. is assisting with a new experimental treatment. This initiative is led by the World Health Organization. Rapid-deployment healthcare facilities are crucial for containing Ebola. Ebola Treatment Units, each serving 100 patients, were key in addressing previous outbreaks in 2014.
The U.S. military could quickly construct and deploy 15 to 20 units, ensuring safe distances from infected individuals. Such operations minimize risk to U.S. personnel. A declining case rate would demonstrate success, potentially catching the Nobel Committee’s attention. A successful initiative could prompt consideration for a Nobel Peace Prize due to its humanitarian impact and protection of Americans.
