Chanel’s Enchanting Couture Show
Inside Paris’s Grand Palais on Tuesday, Chanel presented an unusual fashion show. The venue was transformed into a fantastical garden with giant beanstalks and oversized, vividly colored flowers. Notable celebrities such as Tilda Swinton, Michelle Yeoh, and Catherine Deneuve attended the event. Chanel’s show conveyed enchantment mingled with a sense of danger.
Designer Matthieu Blazy drew inspiration from a book of fairy tales he uncovered in Gabrielle Chanel’s former apartment. This book sparked the theme of Chanel’s rise mirroring a figure like Jack from ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ Clothing items expressed this narrative, with embroidery resembling bean sprouts, vines on dresses, and butterflies appearing unexpectedly throughout.
Items such as evening bags took whimsical forms resembling bears and chickens, while heels were crafted as butterflies and golden eggs. Subtle references to fairy tales like Goldilocks appeared but were never explicitly detailed.
Blazy used jackets and their hidden painted linings or stitched mock to-do lists to showcase the craftsmanship of couture. Frayed edges paid homage to Coco Chanel’s approach during fittings. According to Blazy, haute couture at Chanel tells stories of women’s realities and daily adventures.
The collection balanced whimsy with practicality. Clothes designed for real-life included sharply cut coats, red sequined shifts, and pared-down evening wear. Women of various ages modeled the garments, demonstrating versatility.
Prominent figures in the audience included Swinton, Pedro Pascal, Yeoh, Lupita Nyong’o, Deneuve, Vanessa Paradis, boxer Imane Khelif, and skater Surya Bonaly. Attendees were captivated by the event and left pondering their own day-to-day tasks.
