President Donald Trump is attending a two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, where discussions focus on defense spending and support for Ukraine. Prior to the meeting, Trump ordered strikes on Iran and canceled a license that permitted Iran to sell its oil internationally. He did not mention these actions in his Tuesday night address.
Trump’s actions followed tensions over U.S. use of NATO bases in attacks on Iran. The strikes threaten an interim agreement from last month. On Wednesday, Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
On the eve of the summit, Trump reignited controversy over Greenland, asserting U.S. interests in the territory over Denmark’s management. Concurrently, Trump announced the lifting of sanctions on Turkey to restore its access to F-35 fighter jets.
Denmark Rejects Greenland Claims
Following Trump’s comments on Greenland, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated at the NATO summit that Greenland is not for sale. Frederiksen affirmed Greenland’s right to self-determination and insisted on respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s readiness to defend its territory while expecting NATO allies to uphold their defense commitments.
Support for U.S. Actions on Iran
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed support for the U.S. strikes on Iran during the summit. He described the military response as essential amid Iranian ceasefire violations. Rutte called on NATO members to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities and highlighted the need for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
