Denmark Resolute in Defending Greenland Amid U.S. Interest

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark reiterated on Wednesday the country’s commitment to defending “every inch” of its territory, firmly stating that Greenland is not for sale despite President Trump’s comments about U.S. control over the island.

During a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Frederiksen emphasized Greenland’s status as a semi-autonomous Danish territory, stressing that any attack would meet with Denmark’s defense. She highlighted, “We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory.”

President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with NATO, citing Greenland as a “big problem” for the U.S. He argued its strategic importance not only for the United States but also for global security, suggesting it is vital, despite its lesser significance for Denmark.

Earlier this year, Trump suggested military force as an option to take control of Greenland. In response, Denmark prepared to destroy airfields in Greenland to counter any American invasion. Frederiksen questioned the longevity of the U.S. as an ally in light of these threats.

Recent shifts saw Washington seeking negotiations, requesting expanded military access in Denmark and a larger consulate in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, rather than pursuing direct control.

Greenland and Denmark appear united in resisting U.S. proposals. Frederiksen commented on the importance of respecting sovereignty, citing Article 5 of NATO’s collective defense agreement as essential to their security.

The European Union offered support to Denmark. Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission, stated decisions regarding Greenland belong to its inhabitants and Denmark. He affirmed the importance of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty as fundamental international principles.
