Erling Haaland Reflects on Norway’s World Cup Journey

Erling Haaland did not anticipate Norway reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Speaking with ESPN’s Connor O’Halloran, Haaland shared, “I haven’t thought too much about that because my main goal was to qualify. Honestly, now I’ll take everything as a bonus.”

Despite Norway’s 2-1 loss to England in Miami on July 11, Haaland maintained his positive outlook. Following Norway’s historic World Cup run, he expressed gratitude on Instagram alongside the now-famous “Viking Row” images, stating, “It’s been quite a row, thank you for making it so special.”

“The performances are one thing — beating Brazil is one thing — but putting Norway on the map is perhaps what touches me the most,” Haaland noted during a press conference. “I hope this inspires young people in Norway to see what’s possible.”

Haaland also shared his personal experiences. “Being in the quarterfinals with Norway and then going on holiday feels good,” he said. “I’ve been on quite a roller coaster these past six weeks with so many impressions and emotions. I believe this changes Norway, and it changes me.”

Norway’s participation marked its first men’s World Cup appearance since 1998. Haaland, the Premier League Golden Boot winner, scored seven goals in his debut World Cup. He can now enjoy his vacation, secure in his status as one of the world’s leading strikers.

World Cup action continues with France against Spain in one semifinal on July 14 and England against defending champions Argentina in the other on July 15. The final is scheduled for July 19.
