Pilot Dies in Colorado Wildfire Plane Crash

A pilot who was assisting in fighting a severe wildfire in Colorado has died after the firefighting aircraft crashed into a mountain reservoir. This happened on Sunday evening, according to local authorities.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the pilot’s body from Silver Jack Reservoir. Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie confirmed this in a statement. The body will be transported to the Gunnison County Coroner’s Office.

The pilot’s identity has not been made public as officials are in the process of notifying the pilot’s family.

The crash was reported around 5:17 p.m. on Sunday. The Gunnison Regional Communications Center received a call about an aircraft down in the southwestern corner of Gunnison County at Silver Jack Reservoir.

The aircraft was assigned to the Gold Mountain Fire, which has been burning fiercely in southwestern Colorado. Initial reports suggest the pilot was alone on the plane.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Deputies and investigators, along with the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, responded to the scene.

As of the latest updates, the Gold Mountain Fire has engulfed approximately 35,600 acres and is only 5% contained. Fire officials warn that the blaze may continue to spread, with winds shifting smoke to various communities.

An air quality health advisory concerning wildfire smoke remains active across parts of central, southern, and western Colorado. Authorities intend to release more information once the pilot’s family has been informed.
