Trump Supports Sister of Late Senator for Interim Position
President Donald Trump has proposed a surprising candidate to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham from South Carolina. Trump recommends Darline Graham Nordone, Lindsey Graham’s sister, for the position. He suggested her appointment to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, emphasizing it as a tribute to her late brother’s legacy. Trump’s statement on Truth Social expressed, “I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”
Darline Graham Nordone shared a close relationship with her brother, Lindsey, who adopted and raised her following their parents’ passing. Currently, there is a rush among Republicans to appoint someone to Lindsey’s open seat and ensure a GOP presence in the upcoming elections.
Governor Henry McMaster has yet to reveal his choice for the temporary position. While McMaster remains silent, key figures like Sen. Tim Scott support Darline’s candidacy. Scott shared his opinion on social media, stating, “Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the Senate term.” He also mentioned having discussions with her and acknowledged her understanding of South Carolina’s values and family love.

Along with Nordone, Scott had previously mentioned former Rep. Trey Gowdy and former Sen. Jim DeMint as potential interim appointees. However, Scott emphasized the importance of appointing a placeholder who would not run in the special election but allow voters to decide the long-term representation.
The upcoming special election is scheduled for August 11. Scott remarked, “I think in the next several hours or next day or so we’ll figure out who that person is.” He reiterated that a variety of candidates could temporarily fill the role, allowing for a primary process beginning soon.
Trey Gowdy and Jim DeMint, both seasoned politicians, have experience in Congress, with Gowdy in the House and DeMint in the Senate. In contrast, Darline Graham Nordone has not previously held public office. Sources close to Scott, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), informed Fox News Digital of his preference for a placeholder selection to avoid a long-term commitment.
Meanwhile, hints of candidacy in the special election are coming from Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman. However, Rep. Joe Wilson plans to remain in the House. The broader GOP congressional members of South Carolina have not declared their intentions as the Palmetto State prepares for the primary.
