Schlitz beer, once a staple in American households, is reaching the end of its production on May 23 after 177 years. The reaction has been mixed, ranging from sadness to disappointment.
Founded in 1849, Schlitz became prominent in the 20th century. The brand earned the slogan “the beer that made Milwaukee famous.” The beer soared in popularity post-Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and was one of the most popular beers by the 1950s.
A formula change in the 1970s, known as “the Schlitz mistake,” aimed to cut costs and speed production but instead damaged the brand. This change shifted public perception. As one person on social media pointed out, “Real Schlitz definitely had its own taste,” but the modifications made it unrecognizable.
Competition from other beer companies like Budweiser, Miller, and Pabst also played a role in Schlitz’s decline. By the 1970s, sales began to decline. Pabst eventually acquired the brand in 1999. The original site of Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. is now a historic space called Schlitz Park.
The nostalgia for the brand is evident in many social media posts. A user reminisced about visiting a loved one who always had ice-cold bottles of Schlitz.
Despite its decline, Pabst’s brand strategy head, Zac Nadile, explained that rising costs prompted the decision to retire Schlitz. David Henkes from Technomic told Fox News Digital that the decline in beer sales overall played a part in the decision.
There has been a trend of reduced alcohol consumption. Especially among younger consumers, drinking habits have changed. Beer sales have reached a 37-year low.
The beer industry has been under pressure from emerging alternatives like specialty cocktails and nonalcoholic “mocktails.” Henkes noted the challenges for beer brands to differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
Schlitz won’t exit quietly. Pabst allowed Wisconsin Brewing Company to brew the final batch using the 1948 recipe. Presales for the last Schlitz began on May 23 on the WBC website. Schlitz may have nostalgia attached, but its reputation suffered from quality issues that began in the 1970s.
Brand strength is essential, but quality remains a critical factor. Schlitz never fully recovered from past quality perceptions, affecting its ability to compete on both price and quality in today’s market.
