President’s Orders Reduce National Monument Sizes in Utah

President Donald Trump has signed directives reducing the size of two prominent national monuments in Utah: Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears. These reductions dramatically decrease the areas protected under federal law.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument will be reduced from approximately 1.87 million acres to roughly 181,500 acres. This move significantly downsizes the monument’s protected area.

Similarly, Bears Ears National Monument will face a substantial decrease in its size, stripping large portions of its current protection. These reductions are poised to open significant swathes of wilderness and sacred tribal territories to potential exploration and exploitation for minerals, oil, and gas resources.
