Jordan Walker Wins Home Run Derby Against Kyle Schwarber

Jordan Walker made history at the Home Run Derby, becoming the first St. Louis Cardinal to win the competition. He achieved victory over Kyle Schwarber in the final round by homering on his last six swings, which silenced the Philadelphia crowd.

While Schwarber hit 11 homers during his 15-swing turn in the final round, Walker’s impressive performance captivated the audience. Walker’s success even led some Phillies fans, who favored Schwarber and Bryce Harper, to leave as his final shot soared over the left field wall.

“I was once told you don’t boo nobodies,” Walker commented, reflecting on the experience.

Schwarber, the major league home run leader, advanced through the rounds but was ultimately bested by Walker, a 24-year-old first-time All-Star. Walker’s confident demeanor and backward cap style, reminiscent of Ken Griffey Jr., charmed the massive crowd attending the All-Star Game festivities.

Walker needed just four more homers in his final swings to win. Despite the booing, he successfully hit his tenth homer, culminating in a celebration as fireworks illuminated the field.

“He earned it,” Schwarber acknowledged.

Walker has already hit a career-high 22 homers this season after just 11 in the past two years. His performance in Philadelphia now joins the highlights of Home Run Derby history.

This year’s revamped format focused on drama by abandoning the timed clock. Instead, hitters continued to swing as long as they successfully homered on their final attempt. The extra time allowed hitters to track their home runs and the crowd to react thoroughly.

The final four players from the preliminary rounds were seeded for further competition. Schwarber and Harper received enthusiastic ovations from the Phillies fans, who were hopeful that both could advance to the final. However, Harper was unable to proceed past the first round.

“Bittersweet,” Schwarber shared, expressing his disappointment that both couldn’t advance.

Philadelphia’s love for its own players was evident when Ben Rice, a Yankees slugger, and others were booed. Even the outfield ball-shagging kids were not spared.

Ultimately, this was the first Home Run Derby held at Citizens Bank Park since its 2004 opening. The event, along with the All-Star Game, was aired on Netflix as part of a new three-event package, including the upcoming Field of Dreams game featuring the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies.
