Ukrainian Presence at Bastille Day
On the national Bastille Day celebrations in France, Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops prominently participated, highlighting support for Ukraine and showcasing European military unity. President Emmanuel Macron, hosting his last Bastille Day parade, gathered around 30 leaders for this symbolic event. This gathering aimed to convey a message of European solidarity and defense readiness to Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received applause from European leaders and his country’s troops were met with cheers along the Champs-Elysees avenue. Macron and Zelenskyy exchanged heartfelt hugs as the parade concluded.
Bastille Day’s Historical Significance
Bastille Day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution.
Celebrated on July 14, Bastille Day marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress and prison in 1789. This momentous event catalyzed the French Revolution, leading to the monarchy’s downfall, including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette. Bastille Day is integral to French national identity, with presidents highlighting France’s achievements, mayors organizing village festivals, and families sharing festive meals. The highlight is the parade in Paris, moving from the Arc de Triomphe along the Champs-Elysees avenue. Inspired by this, former U.S. President Trump also held a similar parade previously. The event began with Macron in an open military vehicle, following a military band on horseback, with spectators equipped with hats and fans against the intense heat while aircraft flying overhead created trails of red, white, and blue smoke.
Ukraine’s Special Status
Among 30 heads of state, Zelenskyy joined Macron at the parade’s special viewing area. Ukrainian troops participated actively on the cobblestoned avenue, with Ukrainian co-pilots present in Mirage 2000B fighter jets alongside French airforce pilots, reflecting close military collaboration. Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso, a U.K. soldier, emphasized pride in Ukraine’s participation, seeing it as a step towards stronger ties with NATO. Troops from numerous European nations took part as well, representing a coalition dedicated to supporting Ukraine’s postwar security. Macron appreciated welcoming partners and Ukrainian allies to march and demonstrate strategic and collective unity.
Diverse Troop Participation
The parade included 500 troops from the coalition supporting Ukraine’s postwar security, marking a break from tradition where usually only one foreign nation takes part. British troops partook for the first time in two decades. Ukrainian forces were notably applauded by attendees. In the skies, aircraft from Germany, U.K., Croatia, Poland, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Italy participated. The parade set a record with 7,600 troops marching, contrasted with 5,810 in prior years. Soldiers arrived early, capturing selfies amidst helicopter flyovers.
Impact of Heat and Forest Fires
Intense heat waves and raging forest fires, including those in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris and in southern France, affected holiday traditions. Consequentially, fireworks and firefighters’ balls in specific regions, including Paris, were canceled. Yet, the Eiffel Tower maintained its fireworks and drone show.
