San Francisco’s Shift to Centrist Politics

San Francisco voters are turning towards the political center, indicating a change in a city known for its strongly progressive policies. Mayor Daniel Lurie and moderate allies have established a powerful centrist political influence that appeals to residents concerned about the city’s post-pandemic challenges.

Politico reported that a crucial aspect of advancing Lurie’s agenda is ‘Believe in SF,’ a nonprofit advocacy group. This group has emerged as a significant financial force in San Francisco’s political scene, raising nearly $1.8 million to support Lurie’s preferred candidates and ballot measures in the June primary. Politico described it as Lurie’s ‘political machine.’

The recent election results showed support for Lurie’s moderate allies. Alan Wong and Stephen Sherrill, both on the board of supervisors, won their races by large margins. Additionally, voters rejected a union-backed measure that proposed raising taxes on large corporations with high-paid CEOs, which Lurie opposed.

Efforts to maintain a centrist direction include substantial spending to deny progressives power. Neighbors for a Better San Francisco, an organization backed by business and technology interests, has invested millions in local elections to keep the city on its current path.

Lurie’s influence in local governance is strong, reflected in polling by the San Francisco Chronicle. Lurie enjoys a 74% approval rating, fueled by optimism about downtown revitalization and cleaner neighborhoods. Elected in 2024, Lurie defeated incumbent London Breed, ending a period marked by policies criticized for causing issues like crime and homelessness.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the city’s efforts. The political shift has seen moderates gaining key seats, defeating progressive incumbents in recent elections.

Politico mentioned Lurie’s strong hold on San Francisco politics and the city’s move towards the center as evidenced by his 74% approval rating. His office hasn’t yet commented to Fox News Digital.
