Lucas Haas: Rising Star of Valparaiso Baseball

Valparaiso pitcher Lucas Haas is gaining attention in college baseball circles. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 195 pounds, Haas has an impressive fastball clocked at 91 mph with notable spin. His performance at the Future Games last summer highlighted his talent to many scouts.

Haas recounted the period before the recruiting window opened. “I attended the Future Games,” he said. “Once the recruitment started on August 1, many schools reached out. It peaked in summer but slowed in the fall. Over winter, a few universities kept in touch, and it all picked up again post-high school season.” In his junior year, Haas had a record of 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 46 innings for the Vikings, who claimed the Class 4A sectional championship with a 23-8 record. Schools like Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue expressed interest, but Cincinnati stood out for Haas.

“After my initial visit to Cincinnati, they became a top choice,” Haas explained. He committed to the Bearcats on July 8. The team, led by coach Jordan Bischel, has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons. “The coaching staff at Cincinnati seemed dedicated to player development,” Haas commented. “I believe I’ll grow as a player there and contribute to the team’s success.” Early commitment benefits for Haas include greater focus and clarity for his future in baseball.

Valparaiso’s coach, Todd Evans, spoke highly of Haas. “Lucas aims high. He wants to achieve all-state pitcher status. Our goal is to win sectional, regional, and semistate titles,” Evans said. Haas’s senior year with Valparaiso poses as a final opportunity to celebrate and compete with his teammates. “I aim for a state run and wish to cherish these moments with friends,” Lucas expressed.
