US Troops Assist Venezuela’s Earthquake Relief with Aid from China

U.S. troops recently unloaded the only relief flight from China to Venezuela following last month’s devastating earthquakes. An Air China plane delivered supplies to Simón Bolívar Airport on July 6, nearly two weeks after the quakes on June 24.

Photos provided by the U.S. government show American service members organizing and transporting the aid, which included boxes and large packages, for distribution. The U.S. State Department confirmed over 1.5 million pounds of assistance have been sent to Venezuela, emphasizing quick and effective relief.

U.S. Response to Venezuela’s Crisis

Secretary Rubio assured that the aid response would be substantial and speedy, supported by efforts from public-private partnerships. The U.S. focused on repairing Simón Bolívar Airport, crucial for continued international relief efforts.

American planes have resumed operations, with one of the initial flights bringing essential equipment like forklifts. Florida-based Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is a key nonprofit sending aid, aiming to deliver 100,000 boxes monthly over the next few months.

Challenges in Aid Distribution

GEM’s founder, Michael Capponi, noted the complexities of delivering aid post-Maduro era. Previously barred from entering Venezuela, the current arrangement ensures that U.S. soldiers manage distribution, keeping the aid from Venezuelan government involvement.

The U.S. has pledged $386 million in financial assistance through trusted partners, while China announced $14.72 million in financial and material support, including tents and generators delivered on July 6.

Continued Relief Efforts

The U.S. mobilized over 300 search and rescue personnel across Venezuela, though these teams have since departed after completing their mission. The Venezuelan government reported approximately 4,734 deaths, with thousands more injured and displaced, underscoring the catastrophe’s impact.

As relief efforts continue, rebuilding and recovery remain critical for Venezuela in the face of widespread destruction.
