Sentencing of Illegal Immigrant Trucker Sparks Outrage
Officials from the Trump administration and conservative figures have expressed strong disapproval of the sentence given to an illegal immigrant trucker who was involved in a deadly crash in California. The trucker, Jashanpreet Singh, received a sentence of fewer than five years for killing three people in a collision.
Official Reactions
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy labeled the sentence a “slap on the wrist.” He emphasized his department’s commitment to ensuring that illegal immigrant truckers are “put out of business and held accountable.” The Department of Homeland Security also indicated that immigration officials plan to arrest Singh upon his release, preventing him from returning to the roads.
Crash Details and Sentencing
Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, entered a guilty plea for three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. This plea was related to a crash that occurred in October 2025 on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County, California. His semitruck crashed into slow-moving traffic, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. Dashcam footage revealed Singh did not brake before impact.
Senator Mike Lee from Utah criticized the sentence, describing it as inadequate. He emphasized that Singh’s actions resulted in a fatal crash involving eight vehicles.
Concerns Over Illegal Immigrant Truckers
There is widespread concern regarding the safety risks posed by illegal immigrant truckers. Singh had crossed into the United States in March 2022, gaining a California commercial driver’s license in June 2025. Yet, federal guidelines suggest Singh should have been disqualified due to emergency Department of Transportation (DOT) policies.
Federal authorities had warned California about compliance issues related to issuing commercial driver’s licenses. Despite directives to halt new licenses to non-citizens, Singh obtained his license based on federally approved employment authorization documents.
Debate Over Language Proficiency Tests
A debate among Democratic candidates for California governor highlighted opposition to implementing English proficiency tests for truck drivers. Some candidates argued that such policies are racially discriminatory. Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Beccera pointed out the illegal nature of racial profiling during traffic stops.
On the other hand, former Republican gubernatorial candidate Sheriff Chad Bianco dismissed allegations of racism in enforcing language proficiency standards. He emphasized the importance of law compliance without regard to race.
