In the bustling streets of New Delhi, traffic is typically filled with vibrant auto-rickshaws. Now, many commuters encounter an unexpected sight: portraits of U.S. President Donald Trump. Beneath his picture is the message, “Happy Birthday America!”
About 100 auto-rickshaws now display large images of Trump alongside the Statue of Liberty. These ads stand out amidst the usual promotions for local clinics, language courses, and herbal products.
The unusual campaign is orchestrated by Sergio Gor, the U.S. ambassador to India. It aligns with a larger effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Planned festivities include celebrations, cultural exhibitions, and informative campaigns in various countries.
The U.S. Embassy announced this initiative on social media with the message, “Freedom is on the move … literally!” People in New Delhi were encouraged to spot these auto-rickshaws, described as appearing all over the city soon.
Amid strained U.S.-India relations due to Trump’s tariff policies, which affected Indian exports, this initiative marks a shift. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to visit New Delhi soon in hopes of stabilizing ties.
Despite the diplomatic intentions, many auto-rickshaw drivers remain indifferent. Ganesh Kumar, a driver displaying the poster, was hesitant initially. He was persuaded when offered a package of tea by the campaign organizers.
Another driver, Pradeep Kumar, agreed to participate because his vehicle’s canopy needed repair. When asked about the advertisement, he admitted, “I know he is Trump. Don’t know much other than that.”
