Issues Amid Renovations of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which was drained recently, has shown signs of fading. The protective coating applied in spring, described as “American flag blue” by President Donald Trump, now appears grayish. The Associated Press captured images of the fenced-off pool from the Washington Monument, revealing the changes in color.
The renovation process, scheduled to be ready before July 4 for the nation’s 250th birthday, has faced numerous delays. Initially estimated to cost $1.5 million, expenses soared to over $16 million by June. Despite claims from Trump that repairs would last a century, issues quickly surfaced. An algae bloom formed and parts of the coating started peeling off.
Green Water Solutions, based in Ohio, received $1.7 million to install a water-purification system. Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million to handle repainting and waterproofing. Trump attributes the peeling to vandalism, accusing suspects of creating a “350-foot gash,” although no such damage was visible from the Washington Monument.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated post-Independence Day plans involve repairing vandalism and refilling the pool. Court records show a June 9 incident involving a razor or knife damaging the pool liner. Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn pleaded not guilty to charges of deliberate damage.
Hearn argues that he merely examined the sealant and discarded a piece upon instruction. Critics condemn the case as prosecutorial overreach, insisting he is a scapegoat for poor repair work. Three other individuals charged for allegedly removing paint pleaded not guilty.
Renovation efforts at the Reflecting Pool parallel other projects initiated by Trump in the capital. His notable ventures include demolishing the East Wing of the White House to construct a ballroom costing $400 million and planning a large arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
