President Donald Trump and a lawyer announced the release of a U.S. citizen from Iran, where she had been held since December 2024. Trump took to social media, expressing gratitude toward Iran, without naming the individual initially.

“Iran has allowed an American Citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the ‘presidency’ of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the Country. She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!”

Recently, Trump has intensified efforts against Iran, implementing new U.S. strikes.

Identity and Details of Dena Karari’s Case

Her lawyer, Jared Genser, later identified the released citizen as Dena Karari. Genser, involved in other cases of U.S. citizens detained in Iran, shared the news of her release on social media.

“I am delighted and excited to report that my client U.S. citizen #DenaKarari, who had been trapped in #Iran since December 2024 on bogus charges is now free.”

Genser emphasized Trump’s efforts in securing Karari’s release, noting she is returning to the U.S. safely.

Details of Karari’s Detention

Karari faced a coercive exit ban but avoided physical detention. The Intelligence Ministry of Iran interrogated her multiple times, due to her nonprofit work with the Children of Mehr Foundation.

The foundation supports impoverished children in Iran, operating under an OFAC license from the U.S. Treasury Department.

Genser appealed for Iran to drop charges against local foundation workers.

Ongoing Detentions

Besides Karari, five other Americans remain in Iranian custody. Among them are Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, who have been identified by the State Department as wrongfully detained.
