President Trump’s Challenges in Iran

President Trump, who campaigned on promises to end wars, faces challenges reminiscent of past presidential struggles. He aimed to avoid long-term conflicts, particularly in the Middle East.

Since the Vietnam War, American leaders have engaged in prolonged conflicts, often passing them on to successors who ultimately seek ways to exit.

Trump’s approach to Iran, despite attempts to avert a persistent war, has not achieved his goals of regime change or curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The conflict has complicated matters, including the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz.

Negotiations have stalled, and military action has resumed, leaving a memorandum of understanding in disarray shortly after its inception.

“Both sides looked to the memorandum of understanding as the continuation of the war by other means, not as a bridge to peace,” said Ali Vaez, Iran project director for the International Crisis Group.

Ali Vaez emphasized the absence of a long-term settlement strategy could foster conditions for an enduring conflict.
