Biden’s Upcoming Memoir and Its Political Implications
Former President Joe Biden is set to release a memoir titled Promise Me, America on November 17, a few weeks after the midterm elections. Publisher Little, Brown and Company announced the release date, signaling potential media attention coinciding with the election period.
In a video statement, Biden indicated that the memoir delves into the economic issues he faced, the decisions made during his presidency, and his choice to step back from a reelection bid in 2024. He noted, “It’s about why I chose to run for reelection and why I chose to step aside.” The book’s launch might draw Biden back into the political scene at a time when the Democratic Party is keen to focus on President Donald Trump’s record during the campaign.
There is noticeable division within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s legacy. Some party members have expressed dissatisfaction with his decision to seek a second term, which they believe contributed to Trump’s return to power. Democratic leaders aim to concentrate election efforts on critiquing Trump’s record, and any promotional activities related to Biden’s presidency might complicate this strategy.
“We don’t need to be distracted by what the DNC says about the autopsy. I don’t need to be distracted about anyone’s book,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham commented, emphasizing that voters, especially in New Mexico, are unlikely to prioritize Biden’s memoir or past debates.
Meanwhile, some Democrats see Biden’s return to the spotlight as necessary. Jim Kessler, working at Third Way, expressed confidence that the memoir won’t disrupt future Democratic efforts. He argued that the party needs to come to terms with the 2024 election aftermath. Kessler critiqued the previous belief in Biden’s suitability for a second term and highlighted challenges faced by Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Democratic strategist Maria Cardona remains optimistic, highlighting that the book’s timing minimizes any negative impact on the midterm outcomes. She emphasized Biden’s role in pandemic recovery and said he deserves to share his experiences.
Biden’s ongoing presence has complicated Democratic messaging at times. He is engaged in a legal battle with the Justice Department over the release of interviews, further fueling discussions about his mental fitness. Additionally, his endorsement of political candidates like Keisha Lance Bottoms and Dan Koh indicates his continued influence.
Promise Me, America mirrors his previous work titled Promise Me, Dad, which focused on personal family experiences. The upcoming memoir was supported by a small editorial team, though financial details remain undisclosed. Presidential memoirs often receive significant advances.
Biden, who will turn 84 soon after the memoir’s release, acknowledged his current health challenges, referencing a prostate cancer diagnosis. He stated, “I’ve been spending a lot of time with my family. I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well.”
