Former Haitian President Michel Martelly Returns Amid Controversies

Port-au-Prince, Haiti — Former President Michel Martelly made a notable return to Haiti on Wednesday. His visit marks a rare occurrence as he has mostly resided in the United States since his presidency ended in 2016.

Although Martelly has not disclosed the reason for his visit, local media suggest it might be connected to the investigation into the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Martelly has not faced any charges related to the assassination, but similar circumstances brought him to Haiti about three years ago.

Upon his arrival, Martelly was greeted by several dozen supporters. They played music, held pictures of him, and shouted slogans such as “The father is back!” and “Long live Martelly!” Despite the welcoming reception, he did not respond to questions from the media as he moved through the crowd. Both Martelly and Moïse are associated with the Tèt Kale Party, known as PHTK. The party has been influential in Haiti’s political scene but has not participated in the forthcoming general elections, which have been delayed for over a decade.

Known by his stage name “Sweet Micky,” Martelly has faced multiple allegations of corruption over the years. In November 2022, Canada sanctioned him, and in August 2024, the U.S. accused him of facilitating drug trafficking and backing gangs. The U.S. Department of State criticized Haitian elites for their role in exploiting the nation’s future.

Furthermore, in December 2025, the Council of the European Union enforced a travel ban and asset freeze against Martelly and other Haitian politicians for allegedly arming and supporting gangs to serve personal and political interests. Haiti’s Anti-Corruption Unit has also accused him of misrepresenting assets. Martelly has yet to publicly address these serious allegations.

His arrival occurs amidst Haiti’s struggle with worsening poverty and escalating gang violence, raising critical concerns for the country’s future.
