Albany Park’s largely Latino community faced challenges with increased immigration raids. Nighthawk’s response included organizing whistle kit-making events, with large numbers of people crafting tools to alert neighbors about ICE agents. This initiative underlines the venue’s commitment to community support.
Meanwhile, on Chicago’s South Side, the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) addresses similar issues. Led by Rami Nashashibi, IMAN uses arts for community healing and resistance. The organization integrates artistic expression into their mission, fostering resilience amid political pressures.
IMAN’s Englewood site recently hosted a street fair, connecting locals with fresh food options amid federal aid cuts. Events like these help maintain community bonds and provide essential resources.
Both Nighthawk and IMAN, though distinct in nature, share a commitment to supporting local art and activism. They nurture creativity and unity in their communities.
