Hope in the Fight Against Diffuse Midline Gliomas

Researchers have achieved crucial advancements in understanding and treating diffuse midline gliomas, a type of brain tumor once viewed as a grim prognosis for affected children and adolescents.

Ethan White’s life changed when he started having difficulties during drum practice. A snare drummer with the University of Michigan marching band, Ethan lost sensation in his right hand during practice, impacting his ability to hold the drumstick. This incident occurred just weeks after performing at the 2023 national football championship. Health services directed him to a neurologist after he tripped on stairs. In March 2024, at 20 years old, doctors diagnosed Ethan with diffuse midline glioma (D.M.G.), a fast-spreading brain tumor primarily affecting young people but also found in adults.

D.M.G. stands as the most lethal pediatric cancer, historically offering a survival period of about a year for diagnosed children. Previously, treatments were limited, with radiation managing to temporarily slow tumor growth and alleviate symptoms like muscle weakness and double vision. However, the inevitable outcome was the loss of life soon after.

Recent years have seen pivotal progress. Researchers now understand more about D.M.G., unraveling a genetic mutation present in many cases and testing therapies targeting its effects. These therapies don’t provide a cure but have shown potential in extending survival, with some patients living beyond typical expectations.

“For the first time, we don’t get zero survival,” remarked Dr. Sabine Mueller, head of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Center at UCSF.

In 2025, the FDA approved the first drug aimed at D.M.G. Still, numerous treatments remain in experimental stages.

Currently, Ethan receives hospice care at home, with his parents devoting their time to his well-being.
