Trump Targets Mail Voting Amid Fraud Claims

President Trump persists in opposing mail voting, raising false fraud allegations even after court rulings have blocked his efforts before November’s elections. His stance represents a significant departure from past Republican support for absentee voting.

Trump’s Claims Versus Reality

Trump has repeatedly labeled mail voting as “cheating” and “corrupt.” However, he has used mail ballots in several elections, including in 2018, 2020, and March 2026. In a prime-time speech, he described mail-in ballots as “inherently corrupt.” Despite his assertions, election officials and research show no substantial evidence of widespread fraud. An election fraud database from the Heritage Foundation lists just under 300 cases of fraudulent absentee ballot use from 1982 to 2025. Brookings Institution found only four fraud cases among 10 million mailed ballots in 2025.

Trump acknowledges the political advantage behind his stance. He suggested to Republican lawmakers that enforcing strict voter ID laws against mail ballots could secure the midterm elections for the GOP, noting that Democrats now favor mail voting more than Republicans.

Historical Republican Support

Historically, Republicans have benefited more from mail voting. In the late 20th century, it was mainly considered a Republican advantage, according to John C. Fortier, an elections expert at the American Enterprise Institute. Fortier noted how mail voting was part of the Republican strategy before Trump’s opposition emerged.
