Trump’s Claims on China’s Acquisition of Voter Data

President Trump alleged that China attempted to acquire American voter data during his Thursday evening speech. He portrayed this activity as a major scandal. However, such efforts by China to collect voter data have been widely acknowledged for years. In many instances, voter data is freely accessible online or available for purchase. While this information may provide some insights into American voters, it does not allow for vote manipulation.

Trump claimed that Beijing conducted “the largest compromise of election data in history,” beginning with the 2020 election cycle, and illicitly collected 220 million voter files “over a period of years.” The exact source of this figure remains unclear. It might include names, addresses, and phone numbers, as suggested by heavily redacted documents that feature a table listing volumes of acquired records, such as approximately 204 million records from 2016. China has accessed far more sensitive information before, including government personnel records, which are much more valuable than voter files.

This assertion was one of several made by Trump that were either overblown or not properly grounded in reality. His administration released hundreds of pages of documents that presented a more cautious and reserved perspective on China and other election security issues.

During the 2020 election, the prevailing view within U.S. intelligence agencies was that China did not attempt to influence the presidential contest’s outcome. However, a differing opinion suggested that Beijing wanted Trump to lose his re-election bid.
