Produce Recalls and Healthcare Policy Updates
U.S. companies are responding to a cyclosporiasis outbreak by recalling produce to stop the spread of the parasite. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported over 1,644 cases and nearly 100 hospitalizations. Affected individuals ate at Taco Bell outlets in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. The CDC identified a single iceberg lettuce supplier in Mexico as the source.
Taco Bell announced it is temporarily removing lettuce from certain locations based on guidance from health officials. The company stated, ‘Out of an abundance of caution, Taco Bell has removed potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states.’ Taco Bell has not received an official advisory but emphasizes shared public health responsibility.
Similarly, Taylor Farms, based in California, decided to eliminate potentially affected products sourced from Central Mexico. Although a specific farm in Mexico, constituting less than 1% of the U.S.’s iceberg lettuce supply, is identified, Taylor Farms removed all lettuce from the area indefinitely.
As of Friday, Taco Bell confirmed it had ‘completed removal of affected Taylor Farms lettuce from our restaurants.’
