With the World Cup final just around the corner, President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated the tournament’s success during a reception in New York City. The United States played host to this year’s event, with 11 of 16 venues accommodating matches, including the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the anticipated final.
Infantino lauded the event, stating, “We promised a great World Cup, and it has surpassed all expectations.” He highlighted that 7 million fans have attended the games, while “billions” watched on television. Infantino praised America’s role in the World Cup, saying, “The American dream came to reality. We united the world here in America.” He also noted, “FIFA is the official happiness provider to humanity for 120 years, offering joy and happiness.”
President Trump echoed these sentiments, describing the Cup as “the most successful sporting event maybe in the history of the world.” He added, “It’s been an honor for Americans to share our magnificent country with the world.” Trump emphasized the significance of the World Cup, stating it has been “far beyond a sporting event” and highlighted its special nature.
Both leaders will attend the final at MetLife Stadium, where they will present the trophy to the winners, either Spain or Argentina. Argentina aims for its second consecutive win, a feat not achieved since Brazil’s victories in 1958 and 1962. This marks Spain’s second final, having won in 2010 in South Africa.
