Chinese officials seem to believe that President Trump’s claims of China’s interference in the 2020 U.S. elections are mainly motivated by domestic politics rather than foreign policy.
In May, President Xi Jinping and President Trump took part in events at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During this visit, Trump praised Xi as a friend and emphasized the hospitality he received. He noted that this had facilitated positive trade agreements.
Later, Trump announced that Xi would visit Washington in late September. Despite this, he later accused China of orchestrating an election data compromise in a prime-time speech, citing declassified documents. These documents failed to provide substantial new insights into Beijing’s activities. U.S. intelligence concluded there was no evidence that China had influenced the 2020 election outcome.
