World Cup Halftime Show Brings Music Stars to the Field
The World Cup final between Argentina and Spain featured an unprecedented halftime show showcasing a host of global music stars. This marked the first occasion for such a spectacle during a World Cup final.
Madonna initiated the performance by singing her hit song “Music” underground before making her way to the field accompanied by Brazilian soccer icons Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. The show continued with BTS performing “Dynamite,” captivating the audience at midfield. Justin Bieber followed, introduced by actor Jason Sudeikis in his Ted Lasso persona. He performed “Everything Hallelujah,” altering the lyrics to pay tribute to the World Cup.
Shakira, a frequent World Cup performer, collaborated with Burna Boy on “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official anthem. The performance wrapped up with a children’s choir from Staten Island’s P.S. 22, joining forces with Chris Martin of Coldplay and Muppet characters to perform the World Cup anthem “We Believe.”
The event was orchestrated by Global Citizen, aiming to promote a philanthropic cause supporting children’s education. FIFA sought to emulate the success of the Super Bowl halftime show. However, some critics voiced concerns about the tradition and pace of soccer being disrupted.
The halftime rules allow for a 15-minute break, but with referee approval, timing can be extended. The performance on Sunday was under 12 minutes, excluding the time needed for setup and takedown at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Overall, the intermission lasted around 27 minutes.
Chris Martin, co-founder of Coldplay, selected the artists and directed the event’s creativity. The spectacle, produced by Global Citizen, highlighted a philanthropic fund aimed at benefiting access to education.
Following the halftime show, entities like the Muppets, “Ted Lasso,” and Justin Bieber gained trending status on social platforms. The performance duration aligned with the initial projections presented by FIFA and Global Citizen.
The P.S. 22 choir, hailing from an elementary school in Staten Island, gained noteworthy exposure, adding this event to their list of prestigious appearances, including a mayoral inauguration and the Oscars.
The show sought a balance between creative outfits and traditional athletic wear. Performers like Shakira and Burna Boy combined stylish attire with nods to soccer fashion, Shakira opting for a distinctive stage outfit, while Burna Boy dressed in more casual attire.
