Soccer fans at the FIFA World Cup final experienced extended wait times on Sunday due to enhanced security for President Donald Trump’s attendance.
Increased Security Measures
Fans heading to the 82,500-seat New York New Jersey Stadium for the Spain vs. Argentina championship match faced hours-long lines and rigorous security checks. These included multiple checkpoints and airport-style screenings.
Presidential Protocols Affect Fans
Many attendees waited up to two hours to pass through security as the U.S. Secret Service led the safety operations. The White House had previously announced Trump’s plans to attend and participate in the trophy ceremony with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The presence of a U.S. president markedly increased security levels, designating the venue as a National Special Security Event. This led to more extensive screening and limited access points.
Efforts to Manage Crowds
Stadium gates opened four hours before kickoff to manage the large crowds, and additional entry points were introduced during the afternoon. Nonetheless, long lines persisted outside the venue.
Security featured two layers, involving both the Secret Service and Transportation Security Administration (TSA). According to reports, media members and staff faced similar delays, with some redirected due to unavailable security resources like explosive-detection dogs.
Comparisons to Past Events
The security operations mirrored those seen during Trump’s attendance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in June, showcasing the need for significant coordination between security agencies and local authorities.
As the U.S. continues hosting major sports events, this World Cup highlights the logistical challenges tied to high-profile political appearances.
Despite the delays, organizers confirmed that the kickoff was proceeding as scheduled.
