Indian Protesters March to Demand Education Minister’s Resignation

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in New Delhi on Monday. They demanded the resignation of India’s education minister. The issue centers on poorly managed entrance exams affecting millions of students. This protest is one of the largest in New Delhi in recent times.

The police confronted the protesters. They promised to prevent unauthorized gatherings. The escalation follows police forcibly removing Sonam Wangchuk, a well-known activist, from the protest. He had been on hunger strike for more than 20 days, resisting exam mismanagement. Police took Wangchuk to a hospital under court orders for medical care. His family and supporters opposed the move.

On Monday morning, crowds filled Jantar Mantar. This location is a common protest site in New Delhi. Wangchuk, despite his hospital stay, continues his hunger strike. His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, stated he hopes to join the march. She also filed a legal petition, calling his removal an illegal abduction.

The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not addressed the protesters’ demands. The government warned demonstrators against breaking the law. Many people joined the protests due to the government’s forcible handling of Wangchuk’s case. A lack of response from the government has increased anger. The issue of exam mismanagement remains critical, with reports of student suicides due to stress.
