Autopsies and Independence: A Unique Role in Los Angeles

The release of autopsy reports often lacks dramatic statements. However, there was surprise when the report on 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez included strong remarks from Los Angeles County’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Odey Ukpo. He expressed dismay that her parents waited months for information on her death, which resulted from stab wounds. Her body was found in a Tesla in the Hollywood Hills. Court orders had sealed the autopsy results due to ongoing investigations and murder charges against singer D4vd, postponed until critical hearings this week.

Ukpo’s comments aimed to assert his office’s independence from law enforcement and prosecutors. The agency’s role extends to other high-profile cases, such as the deaths of ‘Friends’ actor Matthew Perry and the Reiners. Ukpo’s office determined the cause of Rivas Hernandez’s death, playing a vital part in ongoing investigations. Ukpo emphasizes transparency and accountability in his work, believing public information should be available unless it hampers police action.

He expressed that withholding autopsy details does not aid law enforcement, as seen in the Rivas Hernandez case. He highlighted the importance of defining how she died and understanding her vulnerability leading to the incident. A court order still seals the Reiners’ autopsy results, despite initial information about their deaths involving their son, who pleaded not guilty.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that security holds on autopsy results are rare and carefully considered, meant to protect sensitive investigative information. The Los Angeles Police Department and district attorney’s office had no comments.

Establishing Independence

Ukpo became the agency’s chief medical examiner in 2023, the first Black leader since its inception in 1850. His team handles around 13,000 sudden deaths annually. Following his appointment, ‘coroner’ was removed from his title, representing an effort to distance the office from law enforcement. Ukpo explained that coroners are often elected officials and not doctors, emphasizing the need for professional independence in death investigations.

Andrew Bernstein, a seasoned New York criminal defense attorney, noted that close relationships between examiners and law enforcement can lead to perceived bias. A medical examiner’s excessive independence might seem counterproductive, but it ensures unbiased examination.

A Career in Forensic Pathology

Ukpo decided on a forensic career path after channeling an early fascination with detective work into his medical studies. He appreciated the hands-on, technical aspect of forensic pathology combined with professionalism. His medical education included experiences at Loyola University and the Mayo Clinic, fostering a deep commitment to public service.

Celebrity cases provide Ukpo opportunities to address public health issues. He performed autopsies for figures like rapper Mac Miller and actor Tommy Lister Jr. Ukpo reported actor Matthew Perry’s death as due to acute ketamine toxicity, raising awareness about the risks of certain substances. Serving the broader community remains the core of his office’s work.
