Michigan Senate Candidate El-Sayed on CNN Interview and Defunding Police
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate for the Michigan Senate, is under scrutiny for his past remarks about defunding the police. This became evident during a CNN interview where El-Sayed refrained from addressing the term ‘defund.’ Instead, he spoke about boosting investment in libraries, public services, and social services. This interview clip has drawn reactions from Harris Faulkner and Lara Trump for his indirect responses.
At a rally in Grand Rapids, El-Sayed critiqued CNN, likening his appearances on the network to a “non-consensual colonoscopy,” a remark that amused the crowd. He expressed frustration over discussions focusing on other countries rather than domestic concerns, emphasizing financial implications for the U.S.
Earlier, on CNN’s “State of the Union,” El-Sayed was questioned by Jake Tapper over previous audio where El-Sayed avoided commenting on the death of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, citing concern for constituent opinions. Tapper pressed on why El-Sayed avoided discussing those who supported the Ayatollah, but El-Sayed deflected, directing attention to recent Iranian attacks in Jordan affecting U.S. servicemembers.
El-Sayed stated his priority is to focus on Michigan, condemning past U.S. wars and advocating for domestic spending. Tapper noted his inquiry about El-Sayed’s unwillingness to comment due to concerns over Michigan’s Dearborn community.
El-Sayed, backed by far-left figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is engaged in a competitive primary against Haley Stevens. He recently clashed with CNN’s Kasie Hunt over deleted social media posts supporting defunding the police. El-Sayed accused the network of prioritizing “clickbait” over voter-centric issues. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez supported him at a recent campaign rally.
