A few weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox seemed like one of Major League Baseball’s biggest disappointments. Despite their large payroll and roster of stars and promising young prospects, injuries significantly affected the team’s depth in the first half of the season. At the start of July, the Red Sox were at the bottom of the American League East standings with a 37-48 record. They held the third-worst record in the AL overall, trailing by 14 games from first place and appeared likely to be sellers during the trade deadline. On June 21, FanGraphs showed they had an 8.4% chance of making the postseason.

Red Sox’s Stunning Comeback

Despite missing key players like Garrett Crochet, Trevor Story, and Roman Anthony, the Red Sox entered a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday after winning 14 consecutive games. They secured a four-run lead and maintained it, ending the game with a strong defensive play by shortstop Tsung-Che Chung. This 15th consecutive victory tied a franchise record from 80 years ago, becoming just the eighth streak of 15 or more wins since 1961, and the first since the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021.

Infielder Caleb Durbin noted to MLB.com, “You keep stacking one win over another, and then you get close, and once you get within three or four, they start to feel like playoff games because you want to get there. But, yeah, then you look back at it, and think about where you’re doing it and how long this franchise has existed. It’s pretty incredible.”

Travel Challenges and Opportunities

The Red Sox faced difficulties in Wednesday night’s game with a chance to set a new franchise record of 16 straight wins. Playing against a struggling Orioles team at Fenway Park, they fell behind when the Orioles scored four runs in the top of the first. Jonathan Rodriguez’s double off the Green Monster contributed to Eduardo Rivera being pulled from the game in the first inning. The Red Sox struggled offensively, losing 5-1 and narrowly missing additional historical success.

Regardless, their achievement was significant. It dramatically shifted their season and impacted the American League East and postseason races. They transformed from a buried position, seemingly out of the playoff picture before July, to not losing a game from July 1 through July 22.

Prior to losing the night game, Boston’s postseason probability had risen to 67%, as they held the third wild card spot in the AL. Remarkably, after winning the day game, they were six games away from the first position in the AL East, although the Rays’ win and Boston’s loss extended it to seven.

Season Shift and Future Prospects

The Red Sox went from likely sellers to potential buyers. Crochet aims to return by the playoffs, and with Ranger Suárez returning soon, Boston is keen to add more starting pitching. Roman Anthony hasn’t begun swinging due to a torn ligament in his finger, and Trevor Story remains some time away from returning, so Boston needs offensive players, too.
