Democrats Gain Ground on Economic Issues Ahead of 2026 Elections

Democrats have gained a significant advantage in public trust over Republicans concerning economic issues, according to a new Fox News poll released on Wednesday. This shift marks their strongest lead since 2006 in terms of registered voters’ trust. Economic concerns are taking center stage as inflation, affordability, and household finances continue to be pressing issues for voters looking ahead to the midterm elections in 2026.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains underwater, particularly concerning his handling of the economy. Voters have expressed dissatisfaction over rising costs and inflation-related hardships, although crime has been identified as an area where Trump has relatively stronger marks. The Fox News survey also suggests that Democrats have an advantage in the generic House ballot, hinting that economic concerns may impact congressional races if current trends persist.

According to the poll, 54 percent of respondents believe Democrats would do a better job on the economy, compared to 45 percent leaning towards Republicans, giving Democrats a net advantage of 9 points. In April, Democrats held a 52 to 48 percent lead. The last time Democrats enjoyed a similar lead was in a poll conducted in July 2006. The survey, conducted between July 17 and July 20, included 1,003 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3 percent.

President Trump’s approval rating concerning the economy stands at 33 percent, with a 67 percent disapproval rating. Additionally, 54 percent of respondents anticipate the economy will worsen in the coming year, compared to 45 percent who expect improvement. Trump’s overall approval rating reported by the poll is 39 percent, opposed by a 61 percent disapproval.

Separate polling among Republican voters reflects similar economic concerns. An increasing number of GOP supporters report weakened finances during Trump’s second term in office. The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey echoes these concerns, with 18 percent of Republicans feeling worse off financially compared to 13 percent previously.

White House Spokesman Kush Desai responded to these trends, emphasizing President Trump’s stance that resolving the Iran situation would lead to a drop in oil and gas prices, and consequently inflation. Desai highlighted past wage gains among workers and underscored the administration’s agenda, advocating for deregulation, tax cuts, and energy abundance to provide economic relief.

Other polls corroborate this narrative. An Economist/YouGov survey found that just 21 percent consider the economy to be in excellent or good condition, while 75 percent perceive it as fair or poor. Opinions on whether the economy is improving, stable, or worsening show mixed results, with 58 percent believing it is deteriorating. This survey involved 1,602 U.S. adults, conducted between July 17 and July 20, with a margin of error of 3.3 percent.

The American Research Group survey reveals Trump’s approval rating on the economy at 28 percent, with disapproval at 70 percent. His overall approval rating remains low at 30 percent, with 67 percent disapproval, based on data collected from 1,100 adults between July 16 and July 20, with a margin of error of 3 percent.
