Detector Dog Uncovers Prohibited Items in Luggage from Thailand

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers recently uncovered almost 100 pounds of unauthorized meat, plants, and wildlife products in luggage arriving from Thailand. This discovery occurred after K9 Maisy, an agriculture detector, alerted officers to the suspicious suitcase. The luggage contained 50 pounds of various meats, including raw meat, as well as 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, and banana plants. Additionally, approximately 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard were found. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took charge of the confiscated lizard.

CBP often reminds travelers of the potential pest, disease, and invasive species threats posed by illegal importation. Their agriculture specialists conduct regular inspections to prevent the entry of prohibited items that might harm the ecosystem.

In another incident, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, inspected a vehicle at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Authorities found roughly 436 fish species, including rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail. The vehicle occupants lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses and planned to sell the fish in the United States. The catch was confiscated as evidence in a probe into illegal importation.

Charges are being pursued based on the unlawful capture of fish in Mexico, fishing without licenses, and attempting to import into the U.S. without proper authorization.
