Mikey Watson Shines in the Double Duty Classic

Homewood-Flossmoor’s Mikey Watson had a moment to savor under the bright lights at Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. Playing in the prestigious Double Duty Classic, Watson seized the chance to make an impact.

Watson, a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor and an Illinois-Chicago recruit, emphasized the importance of his role. “I take pride in my game being the spark plug for the team,” he shared. His energy helped propel the East All-Stars to a 9-2 victory over the West All-Stars.

“Getting the dugout fired up and the momentum started in our favor was huge,” Watson said.

The game began with a bang as Watson hit a leadoff triple and scored the first run. His performance earned him and Marian Catholic’s Jazarris Mackmore the Minnie Minoso Award as co-MVPs. Mackmore added three hits, including a two-run double.

“We’ve played together for four years and have known each other since kindergarten,” Mackmore said of Watson, describing him as energetic and skilled.

In the first inning, Watson’s triple was followed by a double from West Aurora’s Oscar Alexander Jr., who praised Watson’s energy and skill. Watson finished the night 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.

“I was excited and nervous batting leadoff for the first time on a major league field,” Watson reflected. His poise was evident as he initiated three double plays and showcased his defensive skills.

“I want people to know I’m also a defender,” Watson emphasized, highlighting his commitment to using his speed to influence games.

After transferring from Brother Rice to Homewood-Flossmoor, Watson faced new challenges but thrived, helping the Vikings achieve a successful record.

“Making the move to H-F allowed me to be a leader and helped me find my voice,” he said.

Watson’s game centers around speed and pressure. As H-F’s leadoff hitter, his objective was always to press the defense. “I like to put pressure on defenses,” he explained.

Baseball has been integral to Watson’s life since childhood. Playing at Rate Field deepened the joy. “I know a lot of these guys and sharing the field with them meant so much,” he commented. “It was like a dream come true.”
