Samsung has entered the wearable eyewear market with its new AI-powered glasses, introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London. This marks the company’s first venture into this segment within its Galaxy lineup. Two frame designs were showcased, one from Gentle Monster and another from Warby Parker. At first glance, these glasses could be mistaken for regular ones, which is intentional.
Reporters who previewed the glasses mentioned to Gizmodo that they are remarkably lightweight, almost making the internal electronics seem unreal. James Choi, Samsung EVP and head of XR R&D, emphasized the necessity for lightweight frames, stating that all-day wearability is vital. A stylish design becomes irrelevant if the glasses are uncomfortable due to heaviness.
The Gentle Monster frames feature a sleek and minimal design with thin arms and a uniform black color. The top edge runs flat before softly curving downward. Conversely, Warby Parker’s design is warmer with deep brown tones and a gentle upward curve along the brow. This makes them adaptable without appearing excessive. Samsung worked closely with both brands to ensure the frames fit comfortably on the forehead and ears, crucial for glasses intended for long wear.
Functionality of Samsung’s Glasses
The feature set prioritizes audio functionality with an added camera. Unlike Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses, Samsung’s glasses focus on voice interaction instead of a display. No display or heads-up projection is included, so interactions occur through voice, touch, and gestures associated with a paired Galaxy Watch. Power and heat management are handled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip.
Google Gemini serves as the AI engine. Samsung states that the glasses enable users to access real-time navigation, language translation, notification summaries, and location-aware tips, such as nearby coffee shops. The camera enables live sharing during calls, automatic note capture from whiteboards, and real-time text translation.
A statement from Sameer Samat, Google’s Android Ecosystem President, highlights a shared goal with Samsung to integrate intelligent solutions into daily life. Built on the Android XR platform, the eyewear pairs innovative designs with Gemini’s assistance to offer hands-free support throughout the day.
The battery life is estimated at nine hours on a single charge, with the case offering seven additional charges. Pricing and exact availability were not disclosed, although a fall release in select markets is anticipated. Rumors suggest a price range between $379 and $499.
Samsung aims to launch before Meta Connect on September 23. Whether Samsung’s partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker lead to significant distribution through those brands’ retail networks could be a uniquely valuable benefit that mere spec comparisons don’t capture. Won-Joon Choi, Samsung’s MX COO, shared that the intent is to make AI assistance seamlessly integrate into daily life, assuming the eyewear is desirable enough to wear even when its functionality isn’t in use.
