Maine Democrats Unite as Troy Jackson Becomes Senate Nominee

Democrats in Maine are feeling relieved after avoiding an internal conflict to replace Graham Platner as their Senate nominee. Former State Senate President Troy Jackson has secured significant support, leading his main opponents to withdraw and encourage the party to rally around him. Jackson is expected to receive the official nomination at the party’s convention on Saturday.

Former Maine Democratic Party Chair Bev Uhlenhake expressed the party’s sense of relief, noting that members are eager to move forward. Ethan Strimling, a former Portland Mayor and colleague of Jackson in the legislature, echoed the enthusiasm but acknowledged the challenge ahead. He emphasized that everyone understands the effort needed to unseat Sen. Susan Collins.

“It’s going to take funds. It’s going to take knocking on doors. It’s going to take making phone calls,” said Strimling.

Jackson’s working-class background aligns with Platner’s base, which may help maintain their support. Despite lacking some of Platner’s charisma, Uhlenhake believes Jackson’s relatability works in his favor with Maine voters.

Jackson, previously backed by Platner and Sen. Bernie Sanders in a gubernatorial race, has a strong presence in Maine politics. However, he has yet to face the level of scrutiny expected in the upcoming race.

While incidents during his Senate tenure have portrayed him as fiery, Jackson’s campaign adviser and allies argue that his passion should not be mistaken for intimidation. Uhlenhake described Jackson as emotional about issues, defending his occasional outbursts as part of his commitment.

On the Republican front, Susan Collins, a five-term incumbent, is a formidable opponent. Her role as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee enhances her ability to secure funding for Maine. Despite challenges, Democrats see Jackson as a strong candidate, though Collins has historically outperformed opponents in Jackson’s district.

The Cook Political Report highlighted Jackson’s cross-party appeal in his district, suggesting he may attract votes from Republicans and independents. However, Collins’ previous successes in the same areas highlight the need for Jackson to capture ticket-splitters who support Collins but prefer Biden.

According to Geoffrey Skelley of Decision Desk HQ, the race’s outcome hinges on these voters. He notes that partisanship is key, but addressing both Collins and Biden supporters is essential.

The race’s importance escalates as Democrats aim for Senate control. Collins, despite her fundraising strength and longstanding influence, faces vulnerabilities highlighted by Skelley. He considers the race a close call given the political landscape.
